2021 Road Trip Day 8

Updated: Feb 17, 2022

We woke up early, Jerry has a headache which we think is from altitude sickness. It's important when traveling to look out for the signs of altitude sickness including headaches, not sleeping well, less appetite, numbness, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. We're from a low- altitude area (300 feet above sea level), the tallest mountain in Georgia is under 5,000 feet (Brasstown Bald) and the tallest mountain at Great Smokey Mountains National Park (Clingman's Dome) is just over 6000 feet. Therefore, we are very careful anytime we're over 5000 feet by drinking lots of water and paying attention to our symptoms.

We drove Going to the Sun road again this morning. The views were incredible. We saw a grizzly bear and its cub near St. Mary's. When we stopped at Logan Point, Jerry walked around to see if he could see a mountain goat and his headache came back. We ended up seeing a goat just past Logan Pass near a trail head. Unfortunately a man got too close trying to take a picture and chased it off. It was much bigger than we thought it would be. Since Jerry's headache was getting worse we stopped at Lake McDonald for Jerry to get some coffee and medication. We took a walk around Lake McDonald. One of my favorite spots is the creek that flows into Lake McDonald. I found a rock to sit on with my feet in the creek while Jerry walked around. I forgot my Teva's in the car and kept hearing other people say they wish they had their Teva's or Chaco's walking around in the creek and on the shore of the lake. So if you visit, you'll want shoes that you can go in water with that have a strap to keep it on your foot.

Coming out of Glacier National Park there was some awful roadwork, but we made it better by pulling over for some road trip snacks. We also stopped at an interesting combination ACE Hardware Store and gas station. We stopped just north of Yellowstone National Park at Gardiner Area Campground.
